Client/server connection

On my app I use TIdTCPClient and TIdTCPServer (Indy components) to connect clients and server so can I exchange data between them (for example to implement a small chat system and more).

On timeline I have read something about " implement bidirectional client and server protocol". Can I have more information about this? Can I replace my system with this? Is there a example about this?
